But Ann was determined to be a journalist and enrolled in the University of Oregon School of Journalism, one of the most highly regarded in the country. To pay for it, Ann worked constantly during the school year and throughout summer vacation at a wide variety of menial jobs. Being the first in her family to attend college was intimidating at first, but Ann was fortunate enough to have supportive professors, and she graduated in 1978.

Ann had other challenges to overcome once she had earned her journalism degree. Television news reporters at the time were predominantly white men, and being both a woman and a visible minority, Ann faced her share of discrimination. Nevertheless, she soon got a job as an intern at Medford, Oregon's NBC affiliate KTVL, and eventually rose to become that station's first female news reporter. In 1981, Ann moved to KGW in Portland, where she was a reporter and anchor.
Three years later, Ann moved to Los Angeles as a reporter for KCBS. There, she won two Emmys for her work, first for her coverage of the Los Angeles earthquake in October 1987, then for her coverage of the explosion of a gas pipeline in San Bernardino. In 1990, Ann returned to NBC news, first as the NBC Chicago correspondent, then as the anchor of NBC News at Sunrise from 1991 to 1996. During this time, she also served as a replacement anchor and newsreader for the NBC news shows Today, Saturday Today and Sunday Today.

In 1997, Ann was made the news anchor for Today, and continued to be a correspondent for Dateline NBC. She had a wide variety of assignments over the next few years. She interviewed the parents of the McCaughey septuplets in 1997, was the first network reporter to report on the crisis in Kosovo in 1999, and was on the scene reporting at Ground Zero after September 11th, 2001.

Ann reported from the USS Theodore Roosevelt during the invasion of Afghanistan in November 2001, and had an exclusive interview with General Tommy Franks. She reported from Baghdad in early 2003, and then from the USS Constellation as the war in Iraq began. Ann was also the first network news anchor to report from inside the tsunami zone in late 2004.
Ann Curry was named co-anchor of Dateline NBC in May of 2005, in addition to her continuing work on Today alongside Matt Lauer, Katie Couric and Al Roker. She lives in New York with her husband, software executive Brian Ross, and their two children, daughter McKenzie and son Walker.
